Blood Pressure vs. Sodium
I've been fighting High Blood Pressure for several months now, coincedentally, it shot up to extreme heights when I started my current job. Yeah, I know, everybody has stress, what makes me different? Not much, but I also was traveling a lot and eating FAST FOOD. Have you ever looked at the nutrition chart for
McDonalds?
Before I start rattling off the sodium contents of the different items, Check this out: the Recommended Daily Allowance of Sodium is under 2400 milligrams. For those with High Blood Pressure or watching their pressure, the recommendation is under 1500 mg. The average American takes in between 4000 and 5000 mg of sodium per day.
A mere cheeseburger has 790 milligrams of Sodium. My usual, a Quarter Pounder with cheese has 1240 mg of sodium. A Medium French Fries has 290 mg of sodium. A medium Sprite has 80 mg of sodium. The total Sodium content for my Quarter Pounder with Cheese meal is a WHOPPING 1610 mg of sodium. That is my daily allowance in one meal. Bad Lou.
I switched to Subway. My regular meal is a 6" turkey without cheese, Baked Lays plain potato crisps, and a sprite tops out at around 1240 for the whole meal. Still not great, but it cuts out a ton of fat.
